Few authors in literary history have had the ability to craft dialogue and bring characters to life as elegantly, ironically and astutely as British author Jane Austen.Montblanc has created the Writers Edition Homage to Jane Austen to celebrate one of English literature’s most famous authors. This edition transports lovers of fine writing instruments to the Regency era, when noble country estates were the scene of great parties held to cultivate social relationships and forge marriage alliances. The balls held were undoubtedly among the most exciting aspects of provincial life. ‘To be fond of dancing was a certain step towards falling in love’, Jane Austen observes in Chapter III of ‘Pride and Prejudice’, a phrase immortalised on the cap ring of the Writers Edition. As a reference to such glittering evenings, the lace trimmings on the ladies’ ball gowns inspired the delicate net pattern on the cap and barrel.Woven into this is an intricate feather pattern, taking its cue from a decorative needle case given by Jane Austen to her niece, Louisa, and interpreted here as a diamond setting and hand-crafted inlays of turquoise and yellow sapphires. As a final nod to the high-society gatherings, the solid Au 750 signature gold cone is adorned with a turquoise stone cabochon as well as engraved wavy lines tracing the dance instructions for a contemporary country dance. Her style of writing proved popular, and the first editions of her works quickly sold out, yet nobody outside her family knew her to be the author. Unlike with her novels, Austen confidently affirmed her identity with her personal seal on well over 3,000 handwritten letters sent to friends and family. In honour of this, the writing instrument resembles a wax seal stamp, similar to the one Jane Austen would have used.On the solid Au 750 signature gold cap top, the blue lacquer inlay is crowned by the Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl as well as the intarsia of ‘by Jane Austen’. Finally, the names of the five Bennet sisters in ‘Pride and Prejudice’ are immortalised on the cap top ring, together with a ruby set as a rhombus. The writing instrument’s signature gold-coated clip is every bit as unusual as its cap.Shaped like a braided cord with a drawstring closure, it resembles that of a pouch (reticule) used by genteel ladies to carry their powder, mirror and, of course, the indispensable pocket handkerchief. A citrine stone in an antique rectangle rose cut inspired by a pendant belonging to Jane Austen gives the clip its finishing touch. The only known silhouette of Jane Austen, showing her delicate features, is immortalised on the handcrafted solid Au 750 gold bi-colour nib, while the forepart is decorated with an engraving of the author’s signature. The solid gold ring is embellished with translucent turquoise lacquer, the colour of which references Austen’s favourite piece of jewellery.Strictly limited to just eight pieces, the edition honours this masterful wordsmith whose subtle wit, acute powers of observation and razor-sharp intellect continue to resonate with and inspire people all over the world.
